Do vape detectors work in schools? What the evidence shows
The short answer
Vape detectors can alert school staff to airborne changes consistent with vaping, but the available evidence does not support treating an alert as proof that a particular student vaped. A detector cannot identify a person, establish what substance was inhaled, or replace an investigation.
Effectiveness has several parts. Schools should measure whether the device produces usable alerts, whether staff can respond promptly, whether likely events are independently confirmed, whether students move to other locations, and whether the program reduces vaping without unfairly attributing an event to students who happened to be nearby.
The research base is still developing. A Public Health Ontario review found no qualifying school-effectiveness studies through March 2025. Two 2026 studies add early evidence: one documented sensor-recorded events in a school deployment, while another reported perceived benefits alongside false-attribution, displacement, and evasion concerns. These studies do not establish that every detector or school program will produce the same result.
A school should run a documented pilot in the buildings where the system will operate. Useful measures include alert volume, independently confirmed incidents, false or unexplained alerts, response time, repeat locations, bathroom-access complaints, and discipline outcomes. The broader legal point remains that a sensor alert is a lead, not a verdict. Detectors are most defensible as one part of prevention, cessation support, a written response protocol, and periodic program review.
